Legionnaires Disease:
WHAT IS LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE?
Legionnaires Disease is a serious and potentially fatal form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. This bacterium is common in a variety of water systems notably where the temperature of the water is typically stored at between 20 and 60 degrees Celsius.Infection is cause by breathing in small droplets of water which have been contaminated with Legionella bacteria and it is estimated that thousands of people are affected every year. A small percentage of these cases result in death and it particularly affects older people and people with underlying health problems.
WHO NEEDS A RISK ASSESSMENT?
If you are an employer, if you have control of the premises such as a landlord and/or any water systems in connection with work, the ACOP L8 regulations say you must have assessed the risk of Legionella and have your assessment carried out by competent trained personnel.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?
You will need to adopt a written scheme of control, consisting of the appropriate measures to control the risk, implement precautions and get to know the do's and don'ts for your water system. Be sure to appoint a person to manage and log any findings and control measures, be sure that a written scheme is implemented.
